Soft tissue injury may occur during sports, repeated stressful activities or daily activities like sudden twist, stretch, wrong posture etc. Most commonly soft tissues injured are muscle, ligament and tendon.
Following are the types of soft tissue injuries:
- Sprain: Sprain is an over stretch or tear of the ligament.
- Grade 1: Slight stretch resulting in damage to some fibres of the ligament.
- Grade 2: Sudden strong stretch or twist causes partial tear of the ligament and increases joint laxity.
- Grade 3: Complete tear of the fibres of the ligament resulting in instability of the joint.
- Strain: Strain is injury to muscle or tendon due to undue tension on the same. The muscle or tendon can overstretch or tear under the impact of the tension.
- Tendinitis: This is the inflammation of the tendon which may occur due to its repetitive overuse.
- Bursitis: Bursitis is the inflammation of the bursa. A bursa is a sac near a joint that acts as a cushion between the muscle and bone. The bursa reduces friction caused by movement and makes the joint more flexible. It is a common condition that often happens when a joint is overused or there is an infection of the bursa.
- Contusion: Contusion is injury to the soft tissue without breakage of the skin. It may Occur due to direct blow or repeated blow that can injure the muscle fibres and connective tissues.
- Overuse injury: The soft tissue can get injured due to repetitive or overuse, without getting much time to heal.
Signs and symptoms of soft tissue injury are

- Skin discoloration
- Bruising
- Muscle spasm
- Muscle weakness
